Our relationships with horses at Glacial Ridge Equine are based on mutual respect and communication, and we are not afraid to demonstrate that we are truly grateful for the privilege of having these amazing creatures in our lives. We love to show, trail ride, and truly enjoy watching the youngsters grow into confident, cooperative, life-loving healthy adults who enjoy the company of humans.
Our training program is simple and straightforward. We believe that if horses are allowed to be successful, they will be. Quite simply, we do our best to set each horse up for success, or, as the late, great Tom Dorrance liked to say “”prepare to position”, then get out of the way. This simple but powerful philosophy allows us to develop each horse's athleticism, confidence, and life-long potential utilizing only positive and pain-free training and productive interactions.
Our training and handling philosophy is based on decades of instruction and interaction with many competent and diverse horsemen and women, including but not limited to George Morris, Melanie Smith, Leslie Burr, Tom and Bill Dorrance, and Ray Hunt. A special note of recognition to Carol Shepard, Canandaiqua, NY; the late John Smith, Albion, NY, the late Nancy Stowell, Morrisville, NY; Gary Duffy and Donna Hofstead Duffy, Ithaca, NY, whose voices I hear and faces I see on a daily basis.
Our breeding program, always a work in progress, has not developed by accident. Decades of academic and hands-on study, observation, and hard work, as well as an ever-growing
understanding of equine physiology have contributed to the ideal horse that we strive to produce, raise, and train. A lifetime of appreciation for the competent and confident equine athlete has provided us with the means and background to identify suitable individuals for our breeding program. The appropriate genetics are enhanced and complemented by a time proven and horse friendly soundness-focused training program, appropriate nutrition, and meticulous daily management via excellent veterinary and farrier care.
Our goal at Glacial Ridge Equine is to produce a confident, cooperative, and athletic partner who is happy to be around people. While many of our youngsters perform well as weanlings, yearlings and two and three year olds, great minds, sound bodies, and longevity are priorities. A properly prepared horse should be comfortable working cattle, riding out on the trail, or performing in the show pen.
